As we all know Covid-19 has caused many schools, owned businesses, universities, amusement parks, and other businesses to close down. Due to high death rates and many Americans getting sick due to Covid-19 people have lost their jobs and have been out of work. The places that most families go to such as amusement parks, bowling allies, skating rinks, and outdoor parks have been closed as well. One specific place that is shut down in Dallas, Texas that is very popular is the State Fair of Texas. The State Fair of Texas is an annual state fair held in Dallas at an historic Fair Park. Typically, people from all over Texas would attend the State Fair. People from other states would as well. It usually starts the last Friday of September and it lasts 24 days. It opens from 11:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. The State Fair of Texas is the only place where you can get authentic Texas food, midway prizes, the annual photo with Big Tex, and enjoy the beautiful fair grounds with a ton of activities along the park. One thing that most people look forward to when going to the fair is seeing Big Tex. Big Tex is a 55-foot tall figure and marketing icon of the State Fair of Texas. The figure has become a cultural icon of Dallas and Texas as a whole. Big Tex is known for his height and his friendly wave. He has welcomed visitors at the fair for more than 60 years. Texans have many memories of his talking icon and most are loyal to Big Tex as they are to the Lone Star State.

The most interesting thing about Big Tex is his voice. When people walk in the Fair, he greets visitors by saying “Howdy Folks”! Have you ever heard the saying “Everything is bigger and better in Texas?” Nothing is Texas more than a hat with cowboy boots. By him wearing the largest cowboy hat in the world with a size 96 in boots, he epitomizes Lone Star culture. When people go to the fair they don’t leave without getting a picture with him. He has always been included in the annual photo tradition for family and friends. He helps Texans and visitors feel welcomed with his clever interjections and booming voice. Sadly, in 2002 Big Tex caught on fire and wasn’t repaired again until 2013. Furthermore, Big Tex has never missed a year, but earlier this year many people weren’t sure if he’d be back due to Covid-19. According to Dallas (CBSDFW.com) BigTex is out of quarantine and standing tall in fair park. He now has a brand new belt-buckle, a refurbished hat, and a 7-foot by 4-foot face mask. The fair park is currently not open, but staff felt as if it wouldn’t be normal without Big-Tex being present. This year their doing a Big Tex Photo Drive-Thru event which begins Saturday, September 19, 2020. The drives begin on Friday, September 25, 2020.
